To change the material preview shape

  1. Click Tools menu; Palettes; Materials.
  2. In the Materials window, click and hold down the first icon in the strip of buttons below the swatches.
  3. Select a different geometry for the material swatch.

 Dashboard: Materials panel, Display Materials Window
